It’s Veganuary and as I type I’m munching on nuts as opposed to my favourite digestive biscuits you would usually find well positioned on my desk.
I’ve been flirting with veganism for a while but could never get my head around the no eggs, cheese bit, which effectively means no biscuits, cakes… this is where my struggle lies. I find not eating meat quite easy, I just don’t buy it, but biscuits were literally a staple in my household growing up. I lived 10 mins from the McVites factory, my mum worked there for a time and I even worked there for a day (that’s another story). My mum would bring bags and bags of biscuits… anyway you get the picture.
So, I signed up for a weekly food subscription box to help me out with meal prep. This month I started my journey into veganism - I will let you know how it goes…I’m hoping this is going to stick.
Veganism is the fastest growing lifestyle of our generation.
Here are some eye watering statistics;
If the world went Vegan, it could save 8 million human lives by 2050.
- Reduce greenhouse gas emissions by two thirds.
- Animal agriculture is responsible for 18% of all greenhouse gas emissions, which is more than all transportation emissions combined.
- Three quarters of the world's fisheries are either exploited or depleted.
From the beginning of LIHA, we were adamant that animal by-product was never going to part of our ingredients – so much that one of the reasons our soap took a year to formulate was we struggled to find a vegan substitute to honey. There is always a vegan alternative you just sometimes have to do some deep research or just think out of the box. Vegan alternative ingredients have been shown to be just as effective and high performing as the main-stream ingredients.
We believe in small, manageable and conscious steps, our mantra is ‘Buy Less, Buy Well’, which applies to making more sustainable and conscious choices whether it is in what you purchase and your lifestyle choice, or just attempting to minimise potentially negative habits.
