How an African wash net can help with dry skin

Let's face it: Nobody wants to deal with dry, flaky skin. We can apply all the moisturisers in the world (and all the Shea Butter) but if you're not exfoliating properly, you'll always have a bit of dryness. One thing that's mega in Africa is a 'wash net', also known as Sapo - a net that can revolutionise your body care routine and transform dry skin. The traditional tool from West Africa has seen increased popularity thanks to TikTok, so let's delve into whether this viral product is worth the hype.

First of, what is an African Wash Net?

A long, net-like exfoliating cloth traditionally used in West African countries like Ghana and Nigeria. Most African Wash Nets are made from durable nylon, which support with providing a deep cleanse while exfoliating the skin gently yet effectively. Unlike loofahs or regular washcloths, these nets are known for their durability and longevity. The nylon material dries quickly, make it less prone to bacterial growth and ideal for daily use (If you use one, you'll know how quickly they dry after your shower!). But the best bit? The net can be used on the entire body, reaching areas that are often difficult to clean properly.

How does an African wash net benefit dry skin?

One of the primary reasons that dry skin persists is due to dead skin cells. These cells create a barrier that prevents moisturisers from penetrating deeply into the skin. Thus, an African wash net excels at exfoliating these dead skin cells, revealing smoother and healthier skin underneath. The net's texture is perfect for removing dead skin without being too abrasive, meaning you can use it regular, incorporating the wash net into your everyday body routine and can truly prevent the build up of dead skin cells, keeping your skin consistently smooth and soft.

By using a wash net, you can also stimulate blood circulation, which is beneficial for skin health. Improved blood flow delivers more oxygen and nutrients to the skin, promoting a healthier complexion. We also recommend pairing your wash net with our Ose Gidi Soap, and rubbing the soap on the net will emulsify the soap and allow you to lather throughout your entire body.

One thing that is also really important to note is that the African Wash Net is incredibly hygienic, and its quick-drying nature reduces the risk of bacterial growth, which can occur with damp washcloths and loofahs. This actually means you can maintain a healthy skin barrier too, as this reduces the risk of skin infections, which often can exacerbate dryness and irritation.

How to use an African Wash Net?

We really suggest wetting it first with warm water, and then lather our Ose Gidi Soap. Use the next to scrub your body in circular motions and be gentle, but focus on areas prone to dryness such as elbows, knees, and heels. Once you've used the cloth, rinse thoroughly and then we suggest line-hanging rather than scrunching up and leaving to dry on the side (though, this won't be too much of an issue!).

After you've showered, we suggest using our Shea Butter for ultimate moisturise. Our Shea Butter is 100% natural and made to soothe inflamed and irritated skin, reducing scars, stretch marks and blemishes, whilst supporting a healthy skin barrier that delivers a radiant glow to all skin types. Ethically sourced in Nigeria, this Shea Butter is 100% naturally fragranced with an earthy scent and has a waxy, crumbly texture that creates a smooth and soft barrier to seal in moisture.

Where can I buy a net?

Whilst we could totally recommend picking up from local suppliers (or encourage you to visit West Africa!), you can typically get fast deliveries from online marketplaces. Some of the biggest platforms will sell these miracle wash nets, but as ever, we do encourage you to shop from small businesses. Shall we perhaps make our own wash nets?

All in all, transforming dry skin doesn't always require expensive treatements or complicated routines. Sometimes, best solutions are those that have stood the test of time. By introducing this mega simple yet effective tool into your regimen, you can achieve smoother, healthier skin and say goodbye to dryness!
