February turned out to be much busier than I expected, mostly because I said ‘yes’ to everything without thinking about who I could wrangle to babysit.. single mum vibes!!
When my friend suggested that the 1-54 International Art Fair, dedicated to contemporary African art, would be a great chance to network and check out the most stunning riad, Jnane Tamsna, a riad that could potentially stock LIHA, I impulsively booked my flight and accommodation without a second thought.
To be honest, Morocco wasn’t high on my list of places to revisit after a less than glowing experience nearly 15 years ago. But this trip was exactly the reset I needed. Nothing beats basking under the African sun!
So, this post is dedicated to my 72 hours in Marrakesh, because it gave me an unexpected glow-up.
See:
154 Art fair is a contemporary art fair showcasing talent from Africa and its diaspora. The event takes place in two stunning locations: La Mamounia Hotel, a century old palace surrounded by lush gardens, and DaDa, a beautifully transformed cultural space that was once a bus station.
The combination of art, atmosphere, and surroundings was simply spectacular, setting the tone for an unforgettable weekend. If you are an art lover, put this on your list for next year - 1-54.com.
Here are some of my favourite moments:
Eat:
Farmers – Highly recommended by everyone we spoke to, especially for the glazed aubergine. It did not disappoint! Also, try the leek dish, I do not usually like leeks, but this was absolutely delicious. And the cocktails? Let us just say they were cocktailing.
Rôtisserie de la Paix – A gorgeous setting with a dreamy outdoor mix of Parisian and Moroccan vibes. Honestly, the ambiance was more impressive than the food, it was not bad, just not as memorable.
Jnane Tamsna – A fusion of Moroccan and Mediterranean cuisine, served as a set menu. Not much choice, but every dish was divine. The gardens surrounding the restaurant made it feel even more magical.
Stay:
Jnane Tamsna – This stunning riad is on the pricier side, but even if you do not stay here, it is worth a visit. The food is exceptional, the gardens are breathtaking, and the atmosphere is pure tranquillity. Bring a swimsuit!
Riad Romeo – Nestled in the heart of the Medina, this stunning riad hosted an art exhibition I attended, followed by an intimate rooftop performance. A true hidden gem.
Visit:
Riad Elisa Spa – A spa experience I did not know I needed! Tucked away in a hidden hotel, you descend a staircase into what feels like a secret oasis. The pool, right at the centre, is the heart of the spa. As for the treatments? A solid 10 out of 10. Give yourself at least three hours here, swim, unwind, and fully indulge. And of course, start with the traditional hammam. Trust me, you will not regret it!
Read :
Finally finished Kindred by Octavia Butler on my flight back. It was my first time reading Butler, and while I usually shy away from books that depict slavery, I found the blend of time travel and historical fiction absolutely gripping.
Listen:
Had the pleasure of experiencing live performances by the incredibly talented Thais Sala and HASNA on the rooftop of Riad Romeo. Pure magic.
LIHA Tip: flight Skincare
My in-flight skincare routine has become non-negotiable! As I have gotten older, I have noticed my skin gets extra dehydrated on flights, so I always pack:
- Rose water mist – for toning
- COSRX Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence - for hydration
- Orinrin cleansing balm – used as a mask to lock in moisture
- Mini gold shea butter – for lips and hands Short-haul or long-haul, this routine keeps my skin happy.
Marrakesh, you surprised me in the best way possible.
